Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp
We decided to use the car today and explore a little, a nice little Ford Focus…Cam being the one to drive as I’m not trained in driving standard….but after today I wish I was….I would really like to explore a little further afield, oh well. The Sachsenhausen CC is about a 20 minute drive from here and we found it no problem…signage was wonderful. There were lots of high school field trips and other tour groups coming from Berlin. You make your way around this uniquely triangular shaped camp with a audio guide in English. There are some buildings still standing and other that have been rebuilt for the Memorial and Museum site. Many displays….this is a place that you need to come back to quite a few times to read and take in all the artifacts that have been gathered. Sachenhausen is interesting because it was not only used by the Nazis (more and 200,000 people were imprisoned here between 1936 and 1945) but 3 months after the war ended it was used by the Soviets for the same purposes until 1950. All concentration camps and holocaust memorial sites are open to visitors free of charge.
We finished our tour just as the thunder and lightning was erupting and an enormous black cloud threatened a downpour. We had a relaxing afternoon at the house, with Cam and Cassidy going out to pick up a few more groceries for a nice chicken salad for dinner.
